Guidance on PDF application

Please note that the application form can only be filled in online. It is therefore essential that you think about and plan your responses before proceeding. To assist you, the headings under which you will be required to submit information are set out below, together with explanatory notes where needed.

Applicant details

This section asks for the contact details of the principal applicant, including job title, department, telephone number, fax number and e-mail as well as postal address. In addition you will be asked to provide the names and contact details of any other project team members. It is helpful if you provide, as a minimum, the name, title, postal address and e-mail address of each additional project team member. Finally, if there are any advisors or other people associated with the project, please provide their name, title, postal address and an e-mail contact.

With regard to the principal applicant, we would like a brief CV detailing any relevant experience which is likely to assist in the completion of the project, for example teaching practice, previous experience of conducting pedagogical research, access to particular resources/materials, evidence of enthusiasm and interest in the investigation of legal education practice/theory.

Project details

This section asks for details about the project itself, starting with the title of the project, proposed starting date and expected duration. You are then asked to provide a project rationale – why are you interested in developing a project in this area? How does it relate to, and build upon, existing research and/or activity in this area? Following this, please explain the aims and objectives of the project. Please note what you expect to be the main outcomes of the project in terms of developing theory and/or practice in legal education.

You will then be asked about your proposed methodology for achieving the aims and objectives stated. What we are looking for here is a project plan which identifies key areas of activity, the approach that is proposed for carrying out each activity, and the anticipated timetable for carrying out the activities. Please note that this methodology should clearly relate to your budget in terms of what staff will be involved, for how long, the equipment you may require, how much travel will be involved, etc. (See Section C for further guidance on budgetary issues.)

Finally in this section, you are asked to provide more details about the outcomes of the project and the key ‘deliverables’ (for example resources for the UKCLE website, publications, conference papers, an event). All projects are expected, as a minimum, to provide a final report for publication by UKCLE, but we are also looking for evidence that applicants understand the importance of disseminating the outcomes of the project in a variety of ways to ensure maximum impact.

Support & finance

In this section we ask applicants to think very carefully about the resources required to ensure that the project can proceed and achieve its intended outcomes. We have therefore posed a number of questions designed to prompt applicants to think through the resources already available to them and what resources are required in addition. The questions are:

  • What resources (human and material) are already available to you?
  • Have you obtained the support of the department/colleagues/students whose participation will be needed to achieve the project outcomes?

Clearly the answer to this question needs to be ‘yes’, so it is essential that applicants have secured this support before submitting the form.

  • Have you sought funding from elsewhere? If so, please give details.

UKCLE is happy to part or co-fund projects, particularly where the proposed scope of the project takes it above the level of award that we would normally consider.

You are then asked to provide details of your budget against the following headings:

Staff costs (including USS and NI)

If your application gets through the initial sifting stage, please be prepared to specify the names (where known), job titles and the percentage of time to be spent on the project. Where possible, please provide this information in Section B.

Travel and subsistence

This calculation should bear some relation to the expected number of trips, by how many people, to where and for what sorts of purposes described in the project description in Section B.

Equipment (including software)

Again, the equipment is required should be evident from the description of the project provided under Section B.

Maintenance and consumables

This budget is for sundry items such as stationery, postage etc.

Other

You are provided with a text box to specify what items fall under ‘other’.

The form automatically adds up the budget to give you a total amount. You are then asked to confirm how much of the total you are seeking to receive from the Project Development Fund.

Please note that we do not intend UKCLE funds to be top sliced by your institution and no allowance is made for overheads in our awards.

Finally, you are provided with a space in which you can add any other comments or supporting evidence.

Once you have completed the form to your satisfaction, click submit.
